All Quiet on the Western Front, A Story of the Great War (A German war poster"Let God Punish England") A short history of World War I. World War One began with the assassination of Austria's crown prince. Not long before this, many European countries had formed alliences with each other. The asassination set the newly formed alliences against each other. Also new devolpments in weapon's technology became availble so that this became the first war with planes and tanks. Machine guns also were a common sight and artillery fire thundered through the air. The new devolopments in weapons led to problems, mainly mobility. All these new powerful weapons lacked the ability to move at any great speed. Tanks slouched along at a top speed of six or seven miles per hour and artillery had almost no mobility. New machine guns fired at over six hundred rounds a minute. The machine guns could cut down a group of rushing soliders long before they could become a threat. World War I era machine guns had a problem with overheating that could only somewhat be solved by cooling the barrels with water. With all of this chaos, the war soon evolved to trench warfare. (A group of soliders in World War I) All Quiet on the Western Front All Quiet on the Western Front is a book about World War I. It covers the horror of this war through the eyes of a young German solider, Paul Baumer. This book is not like other books and stories that glorify wars. It tells the horrors of war in graphic detail. The story recalls the bloody details of bombing, gun fire, gas, hand-to-hand combat, barbed wire, trench warfare, airplanes, artillery fire, and the insanity of war. The story is told first person, and was originally written in German. The main character, Paul befriends many people throughout the course of the book, and also loses many friends. Paul and his companions suffered much in the story, and learned much about the differences between the people sent to fight and the people who are sent to fight. This book has taught me about life and loss. It is not for everyone, but I do recommend it to anyone who thinks that war, death and destruction are something that can be shrugged off. The book ends on a sad note, leaving the reader to think that war is a sick and disgusting thing. (Geramn war poster.) About The Maker Of This Wonderful Page, I, Ethan Nunan, am the creator of the best page you'll never see on the web. I have done this page for an English report at my school in Anchorage, Alaska. I myself enjoyed the book greatly. It was well written and informative. Like I mentioned before, it is not for all people out there, and I think that persons under twelve would have a hard time with it. I have read this book twice and not because I had to. I am seventeen, and am not like other teens. I was born in Fairbanks, Alaska on New Years Day. I moved down to Anchorage in 1992 and can't wait to get out of this state. I really love my bass guitar. I intend to be in a band as the bass player and eventually make songs like Smashing Pumpkins, which happens to be my favorite band. I want to be in a band more than anything and then start a restaurant on the west coast somewhere. I really like to snowboard, and also I love rock climbing. Everyone should try these sports at least once. The only problem with these sports is that they are not glorified and they are not accessible to everyone. (German Red Cross Poster.)
